The first inaugural Bairnsdale Rowing Club presentation night was held at The Riversleigh since the club reconvened in 1987 on Saturday May 5th. Bairnsdale Rowing Club president, Ron Alexander, welcomed special guests, East Gippsland Shire mayor, Cr Joe Rettino, and rowing great, Margot Foster AM, along with over 60 members including masters, seniors and juniors.
“It is great to see the club coming of age,” Ron said. “Gathering here together like this is just fantastic and it can only go well for the future.” Cr Rettino congratulated the club for the success it has achieved and the sporting opportunities it provides both juniors and seniors in the wider Gippsland area.
Rowing is acknowledged as a minimal impact full-body exercise that is both relaxing and very social. Margot Foster AM entertained the members with a very amusing description of her rowing career especially her journey toward representing Australia in the Olympic Games and when rowing was still a sport listed in the Commonwealth Games. The club researched and found the original seven awards and presented them to very deserving members. It was a very successful night as everyone stayed on after the formalities to socialise and discuss the very successful season.
